1. A syllable = consonant + rhyme + tone
nướcwater is n (starting consonant) + ươc (rhyme) + the sắc tone. Every syllable works this way.

Our dictionary counts 6,861 different syllables, built from only 27 ways to write a starting consonant and 161 rhymes. That's the whole system.
2. The alphabet gives you the starting consonants
29 letters and 11 double consonants (ch, kh, ng, nh, ph, th, tr…). Each comes with a word you already know. Open the alphabet.
3. Two kinds of marks
Hats, breves and horns make letters; five other marks give the tone. They stack on the same vowel. Vietnamese accent marks explained.
4. Rhymes: learn them through words you know
A rhyme is everything after the first consonant. One word you know per rhyme unlocks every word that shares it.

Quick answers
Is Vietnamese hard to read?
It uses the Latin alphabet and is written as it is pronounced, by rule. The hard part is the tone marks; once you hear the tones, as heritage speakers do, it goes fast.
How long does it take to learn to read Vietnamese?
It depends on how much Vietnamese you already hear. If you understand your family, the alphabet and the most common rhymes are enough to start reading everyday words.
What should I learn first?
The alphabet (starting consonants), then the marks, then the rhymes through words you already know. The tone rules come along in parallel.
