hỏi or ngã?
Two different marks in writing (hook / tilde). In the South they sound the same: only knowing the word tells you which.
ngủ · phở · sữa · mũi
Each line adds one piece. Read it aloud, then tap a card to compare: a consonant plays the way it is spelled at school (ph = “phờ”).
Spelled the Vietnamese school wayu ngờ ung dờ ung dung ngã dũng
dũngcourage, bravery
The same letters without a tone (the root), then with each tone the spelling allows: some are words, some only possible syllables.
Same sound, different spelling: the accent changes the sound, never the written word.
13 other real words are spelled dung apart from the marks. Only the marks tell them from dũng.
Same rhyme, same tone: only the first consonant changes. That's how the app teaches reading, from words you know to every word that sounds like them.

Block by block: u → ng → ung → d → dung → ngã → dũng. Tone: ngã (tilde · broken rising). Read each block aloud, then compare with the recording, in a Southern or a Northern voice.
ngã (tilde · broken rising)
South · Sài Gòn: d = gi = v, ngã = hỏi. North · Hà Nội: d = gi = r.
Without the marks, dung can be several words: đứng (to stand), đúng (right, correct), đừng (don't (negative imperative)), dùng (to use), dừng (to stop), dựng (to build, erect), đụng (to touch, bump into), đựng (to contain, hold), dung (to tolerate), đùng (boom (sound)), dưng (but (colloquial)), đũng (crotch). The marks decide which one.
